OVERVIEW.

QUALITY OF LIFE: 3/10.

INDUSTRY: Coal Mining. This is primarily used for textile production in D8 and the synthesizing of certain materials, including and especially precious gems.

ENVIRONMENT: One of the smallest Districts in Panem. Like D1, D2, and D3, District 12 is the size of a slightly oversized city, larger than B.D.D. New York. It consists of a mountainous area, rural areas, abandoned streets and sections (such as the former Seam, which has been burned to ash), and forested areas. Population of approx. 3,000.

OTHER FEATURES.

LONGEVITY — Analysts predict that D12 will last one more generation before becoming wholly unnecessary to the prospering of Panem. A vast majority of the mines have dried up or fallen in on themselves. Most of the livable areas of the District, such as the Seam, have yet to be rebuilt. The District’s population has also seen a severe drop-off in the past quarter of a century, both due to a lack of resources and disease, having suffered from the same bird flu as District 4. Abandoned houses are in equal number to the amount of abandoned mines.

MISSING PEOPLE – It is common for people to go missing. Some believe it is the Capitol, others believe those gone are hiding in the mountains, having escaped the half-dead District.

THE UPRISING — Twenty-five years ago, following the 3rd Quarter Quell, District 12 was firebombed, turning most of the residential area into ash. It took a decade to rebuild the town square. Most families were left unhoused, missing family members, or were rounded up in the fallout of the Rebellion and placed amongst other Districts. In fact, amongst orphans, this practice is common. The irony of the Rebellion is that District 12 never actually rebelled — and its likely that they wouldn’t even rebel now.
